Medical billing and coding, now often called Health Information Technology, covers two elements of medical office administration:  billing and insurance coding.  The primary goal of billing is to make sure that the doctor or hospital is paid for their service.  The goal of insurance coding is to ensure that the medical visit or procedure is submitted to the insurance company with the correct insurance code so that it can be processed properly.
